Following the third round of the PGA Championship, Bryson DeChambeau was critical of the existing swing analysis models. He stated his swing speed was yet to be tested by these models, and they had their constraints.
DeChambeau is currently in the Valhalla Golf Club for the season's second Major. After three rounds, he was in a great position to win, as he was just two strokes behind the lead at 13-under.
On Saturday, May 18, during the post-round press conference, DeChambeau expressed concerns about the current equipment testing models. He said that the current robots have not even tested the levels of his or Jake Knapp's swing. For the uninitiated, he is known to be one of the longest hitters on the golf ball.
"If we are all being honest, if everybody is being honest, it's not truly been tested on a robot, nor can it be," he said. "And then FEA models only go so far; so it's kind of a journey. FEA is finite element analysis -- or finite element modeling -- element analysis modeling, sorry.
"It's only as good as the inputs you give it, and it's just a model in the computer. There's not enough information known right now, but I'm willing to go down that path and figure it out," he added.
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is currently used in designing and manufacturing golf equipment to enhance performance and durability as per player's satisfaction. However, the former US Open champion felt that this model had its limitations.
Speaking about his current equipment, Bryson DeChambeau said he was happy with his driver and 5-wood but still had concerns with the 3-wood.
"It's a slow but study grind to improving my equipment each and every week and -- well, now each and every year, and I'm looking forward to the future on that stuff. There's a lot to come about on that front," he said.
