Tommy Fleetwood is hoping to give some joy back to his countrymen after England's heartbreak at the Euro Cup final last week. He added that he would like to give his country a 'little boost' this week.
Tommy Fleetwood is at Royal Troon this week to make his tenth start at the Open Championship. He is looking to become the first Englishman to win the national major in 32 years.
On Wednesday, July 17, Tommy Fleetwood addressed the media ahead of the Open Championship. During the press conference, he showed praise for England's soccer team's performance at the Euro Cup.
"We did great in the football," he said. "It was a shame in the end, but still I think the excitement surrounding it was great for everyone.
On being asked if he was looking to give his nation a boost after England's 2-1 loss to Spain in Euros, Fleetwood said he would love to do it both for himself and his country.
"I love this tournament so much, and it has been a long time since there's been an English winner," he continued.
He added that he had always loved the Open Championship and had received immense support whenever he'd been in contention.
"I've always loved those times and looked back on those with a lot of fond memories really. So I always get excited about coming to play this tournament. Yeah, sure, if it came to it and that was something that gave the country a little boost, then great," he concluded.
How has Tommy Fleetwood performed at the Open Championship so far?
Tommy Fleetwood has made nine appearances at the Open Championship and has a few good results here. In his nine appearances at the oldest major, he has made six cuts, including three top tens.
Fleetwood's best result came in 2019 when he finished runner-up after losing to Shane Lowry by four strokes. Notably, this was his joint-best result at any major championship. He also finished T4 three years later and then tied for tenth at last year's edition.
This year, the Englishman has had some good results, including a T3 finish at the Masters Tournament. It will be interesting to see if he becomes the first Englishman in three decades to win the Open Championship or if fans will have to wait longer.
