Jason Day recently recalled a humorous incident from the US Open. In an interview with the Australian Golf Digest, Day shared a recent memory of when his Olympic teammate Min Woo Lee ditched him for Tiger Woods at Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Two weeks ago, the US Open was played at Pinehurst Golf Course No.2 from June 13 to 16, 2024. Before the tournament, Day had planned to play an early week practice round with Lee. However, Lee was invited by Tiger Woods to play with him. As a result, Lee had to forego his plans with Day. While talking to Australian Golf Digest, Day said:
“Yeah, ‘Minners’ and I are good mates and we play practice rounds all the time at majors. I’m going to throw him under the bus a little, but he’ll understand. He’s a good fella. We were supposed to play a practice round at [the] US Open, but he ditched me for Tiger. I would probably have ditched myself for Tiger."
After bailing on Jason Day, Lee apologized to 13-time PGA Tour champion and proceeded to play with Woods and Max Homa. Woods's son Charlie is a big fan of the Australian social media star and also joined the group on the course. Day further said (Australian Golf Digest):
"He texted me and said, ‘Hey, sorry man. I had an opportunity to play with the big cat [Woods]. I said, I’ve been there before and I would have done [the] same thing myself.'"
Jason Day failed to make the cut at the US Open 2024 after rounds of 73 and 76. He had an aggregate score of 9-over 149 after 36 holes and missed the cutline by 7 strokes. Meanwhile, Min Woo Lee finished with a score of 5-under 275 and tied up for the fifth position with Rickie Fowler and Tommy Fleetwood.
Both Day and Lee will represent Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics where Men's event will be held at Le Golf National from August 1st to 4th.
