The Canadian fans, who gathered at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec for the Presidents Cup, faced some criticism from players on Thursday (September 26).
International Team players including Tom Kim and Adam Scott pointed out that the local fans weren’t supportive enough during their 5-0 loss to the US side, despite being the home team. The players were forced to eat their words on Friday as the fans delivered an improved atmosphere.
The Presidents Cup International Team, who seemed pleased by the increased fan support during Day 2, beat the US side 5-0 to make it a 5-5 draw in the competition. Following this, the American skipper Jim Furyk admitted being awed by the fans. He claimed that more viewers attended the latest round, making it a ‘lot louder.’ He replied positively when asked if he felt like playing “more of an away game” on Friday.
The former Ryder Cup skipper went on to laud Mike Wier’s International team for their efforts as well.
Replying to a media person’s ‘away game’ question, Jim Furyk said, as quoted by ASAP Sports:
“Yeah, absolutely. Yesterday the crowds weren't nearly as big yesterday as they were today. Yesterday we had the momentum, so the crowds that were here we were able to silence a little bit. Opposite thing today. More people here today, a lot louder on the 1st tee, and the Internationals gave them a lot to cheer for, a lot of big moments, a lot of great shots.
"My hat's off to them. Those guys played really well. For alternate shot, there was a lot of birdies made and a lot of guys that were well under par.”
It is pertinent to note that The Royal Montreal Golf Club was not jammed full of spectators on Thursday. The International side admittedly didn’t get the ‘home-course advantage’ as the Americans clean swept the four-balls matches. Notably, Tom Kim was blunt in admitting that the course was “a little too quiet being on home soil” after the opening round.
International Presidents Cup Team captain on Canadian fans
Mike Wier was admittedly happy with the Presidents Cup fans on Friday. The home team skipper came out after the impressive 5-0 win to state that the crowd was “bigger” and “clearly more energetic.” He dubbed it “fantastic.”
Wier said in the captains’ presser on Friday, as quoted by ASAP Sports:
“They were clearly more energetic today, bigger crowds. I said, I think, on the Golf Channel, I thought maybe half of Montreal took the day off of work. The crowds were that big out there and really energized from the get-go, from the 1st hole. It was fantastic.”
The Canadian golfer added that he hoped the atmosphere was “just as loud” over the weekend. He said the team wishes the same.
It is pertinent to note that Wier’s comments were backed by almost every Presidents Cup International Team player in their pressers. The golfers, including Kim and Scott, ate their earlier critical words and lauded the fans for showing up in big numbers on Friday.
