Two of the most well-known personalities, Jimmy Fallon and DJ Khaled, competed in a four-hole match, which will air on September 13th at 11:35 PM ET on NBC. The four-hole match is named Cardigan Classic, and the goal of this short exhibition match was to open up golf to a wider audience.
The event took place at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Nevada during the American Century Championship in July. DJ Khaled and Jimmy Fallon played the 17th and 18th holes twice after the American Century Championship. Speaking to "GOLF.com" about the match, Fallon said,
"I think it’s opening golf up to a wider audience. This is faster, it’s funnier. You know, it’s me. There’s just two people you wouldn’t really think to see playing each other," Jimmy Fallon said.
Jimmy Fallon said that the idea for the match came on a whim. He had witnessed DJ Khaled's obsession with golf, prompting him to reach out to the American DJ through his production company to enquire about his potential interest in a match tailored for entertainment.
Khaled agreed, and NBC provided the production team for the four-hole golf event as their crew was already present at the venue for the American Century Championship.
"Dude, this is old school. This is the Wide World of Sports. It’s funny, it’s entertaining. It’s only four holes. It’s on late," Jimmy Fallon said.
The Cardigan Classic is named after the red Cardigan, which is given to the winner of the four-hole event.
DJ Khaled once voiced his desire to become a pro golfer
Golf is one of the most popular sports in popular culture, as various celebrities take up golf as a leisure activity. However, DJ Khaled revealed he wanted to take up golf professionally and become a pro golfer. Speaking to "Fox Digital" last year in June, he said,
"I want to go pro. The reason why I say that is, if for some reason I don’t go pro, I want to be able to play in some real big matches," DJ Khaled said.
He then drew parallels between golf and life and expounded the beauty of this sport.
"Golf is a beautiful sport," he said. "Golf is like life: It’s not easy, but it’s beautiful. Every day, you try to perfect [your game]. You’re battling yourself to be greater and greater every day on the course. It’s a special addiction because just the way you hit the ball, and you get that sound, you want to keep getting that same love every time you hit the ball," he added.
