Jon Rahm doesn't believe that Sergio Garcia should miss out on being a Ryder Cup captain someday. Unfortunately, a widely forgotten rule says that Garcia can't be a vice-captain to Luke Donald now and can't be a captain on his own in the future.
Donald said the rules "will have to change" if Garcia is ever to get into a leadership role, but Rahm was much more blunt when he discussed it. Via Telegraph, he said:
“I think it would be really stupid of anybody not to lean on Sergio Garcia’s experience in the Ryder Cup. I mean, he is the best player Europe has ever had, won the most points and has shown it time and time again. If he were able to be a vice-captain, I absolutely would lean on him.”
Rahm later joined LIV Golf with Garcia, so he was subject to fines and potential roadblocks to the Ryder Cup as well. Rahm fought his way into several DP World Tour events to retain membership and be eligible for the Ryder Cup, which he is.
Garcia has recently paid millions in fines to get his membership back, but he's not currently ranked on the European team standings. Rahm is 17th presently but would probably be a captain's selection if it came down to it.
Garcia faces an uphill battle to getting back on the team at 44 years old. But, Rahm, one of the most influential players, and Donald, the captain, have both said they'd like to see him involved.
Unfortunately, the only way for him to be involved ever is as a player, which severely limits his options as a veteran player.
Jon Rahm believes Sergio Garcia still has the talent
Jon Rahm won the individual standings for LIV Golf last season. In third was Sergio Garcia after a very strong year. Rahm believes Garcia, who wants to play in the 2025 Ryder Cup, still has the talent to compete.
Via The Guardian, he said:
“For people that see him any given day, Sergio Garcia can a can hit it tee-to-green better than anybody on the planet. It’s that simple. He’s still that good and he’s still very valuable."
Rahm said he understands the challenges facing Garcia and admitted that the 2023 team played very well without him. That said, he wants to see his fellow Spaniard on the team.
Jon Rahm isn't guaranteed a spot on the team, but he's fought hard to get there. He said he doesn't know "what's going to happen in the future," but said his plan is to be on "that team at Bethpage." He has been appealing his DP World Tour fines in the meantime, which could throw a wrench in his plans.
