Justin Thomas recently shared a memo with his fellow PGA Tour players urging them to be more open with the media. Thomas, who has been on the PGA Tour Policy Board for a decade, wants to see his counterparts interact more and share more with the media so that everyone has better access to the sport.

Thomas said (via Golf Channel):

"We've had some discussions and talks with TV partners, and it felt... obviously, any sport, anything wants to get better and wants to continue to grow... I really feel like these last couple of months... if you're a fan of the sport, you think it's really cool."

The PGA Tour star said he's thought a lot about how much he engages with other sports as a fan and that the level of media access plays a big role in that. He and others, including Max Homa whom he name-dropped several times, believe that's what is missing in golf.

He continued, noting that he felt the plea coming from players would carry more weight than if it had been handed out by an executive. If a player wants other players to do something, they're more inclined to do it than if an executive or higher-up asks for it.

Thomas said:

"We want everybody to be in this together and try to improve our product... I've had a lot of positive messages [in feedback from players]... I don't want this to be something like everybody's gotta change, make a total 180 of how they go about everything. I more just want it to be considered."

So far, there hasn't been a lot of pushback on Thomas' idea.

What did Justin Thomas' memo say?

Justin Thomas proposed that golfers develop a stronger relationship with the media that covers the sport. He wants them to consider doing more pre- and mid-round interviews, wearing a microphone during rounds, and detailing equipment and swing changes to networks for broader coverage.

He said he understands that this isn't an easy change, and he's been among the players who wanted nothing less than to do a mid-round interview during a tournament.

His letter read via Golf Digest:

“I also know how much the fans love those moments – hearing our thought processes, conversations with our caddies, our reactions to shots, and understanding the ups and downs of competing at the highest level.”

In-tournament interviews are new to golf, but they're not very popular among players. Justin Thomas, along with Max Homa, Adam Hadwin, and MacKenzie Hughes, believe this can work. Thomas cited the brief halftime questions for NFL coaches that take virtually no time but add some interest to fans watching at home.
