Justin Rose opened up about the captaincy for the 2025 DP World Tour's Team Cup. The European Tour has brought back the second edition of the Team Cup, scheduled this week. The tournament will feature two teams, Great Britain and Ireland and Continental Europe, in Abu Dhabi.
Justin Rose is leading Team GB&I in the team event this week. During the press conference of the tournament on January 9, 2025, Rose opened up about leading his team at the tournament this week.
When asked about getting inputs from Luke Donald, European Team Ryder Cup Captain in 2023, Rose said (via ASAP Sports):
"Honestly I think I am a bit of a hybrid. I think Edoardo on the stats side, he's been very important to Ryder Cups in recent times. And I think even on my own personal individual game, you can get great insights by using the stats."
Further reflecting on instinct also playing a role, Justin added:
"I also think coming into this week, first week after Christmas, stats maybe are less relevant than if we've played ten or fifteen tournaments and we all know exactly where our games are. There's a few guys changing equipment and this and that. There's a few variables in there. I think sometimes you've got to play a little bit of a hunch, too," he added.
The Team Cup has a similar format to the Ryder Cup. The 2025 DP World Tour's Team Cup is a three-day event. It will start its first day on January 10 and run through the weekend, concluding on Sunday, January 12, at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort.
Justin Rose reflects on his dual responsibility at Team Cup
Justin Rose is serving as the captain of Great Britain and Ireland this week and during the press conference on January 9, the Englishman reflected on his dual responsibility as a player and as a captain leading his teammates, saying (via ASAP Sports):
"It's a honour, first and foremost. I think it's been something that's sort of been on my mind. Because obviously sometimes you play as a player, you're obviously preparing all the time for tournaments that come up," Justin Rose said.
"But when you have something like this looming large, you start thinking about it months in advance. What do I want to say? Are there any good ideas I have? What have I learned from previous captains? I feel like it's been a very big responsibility in my head for a number of months now and I think it's going well," he added.
Both teams playing this week have ten players each. For Team GB&I, Rose will be joined by Laurie Canter, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin, Aaron Rai, Jordan Smith, Matt Wallace, Paul Waring, and Matthew Jordan.
