Fans were unhappy with Joaquin Niemann complaining about not being able to qualify for The Open Championship 2024 until he won the Australian Open in 2023. The Chilean golfer joined LIV Golf in 2022, after which he was banned from competing on the PGA Tour. Notably, the Saudi circuit players do not earn ranking points, which impacts their qualification for the Majors.
Niemann struggled to qualify for the Major until the very end of 2023. Fortunately, he won the 2023 ISPS Handa Australian Open in December 2023 after defeating Rikuya Hoshino in a playoff. The victory allowed him to qualify for The Open Championship 2024 directly.
He also earned special exemptions to compete at the Masters and the PGA Championship in 2024. However, despite earning exemptions for the Majors in 2024, he was unhappy with his initial struggles to make it into the field.
Niemann is competing at this week's The Open Championship and fortunately made the cut after playing 36 holes. Following the second round of the Major, he reflected on his emotions, stating that he was sad when he did not get into the field of The Open.
Golf Digest's Christopher Powers shared a video clip of Niemann's interview on his X account, where the golfer said:
"It was really sad that I was not in."
Fans in the comments section were disappointed with Joaquin Niemann's complaints about qualification for the Major, stating that it was a consequence of him joining the Saudi-backed circuit.
"LIV “victims” of their own decisions," a fan wrote.
"How mad," another fan jotted.
Another fan urged him to move on and stop complaining about the qualification process.
"LIV guys need to stop with the nonsense, they chose to take the money (generational wealth) over playing in majors. There a consequences for the choices you make. Like move on enjoy your life," another fan commented.
