A number of golfers have withdrawn from the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open after the second round was suspended on Thursday, January 23. This week, PGA Tour players have been competing at Torrey Pines. However, the tournament has seen a large number of withdrawals from players.
Xander Schauffele withdrew from the event ahead of the start due to an injury, followed by other players such as Will Zalatoris, Collin Morikawa, and Nicolai Højgaard. Play was suspended on Thursday due to darkness, and several other players, including Max Homa, Max McGreevy, Paul Peterson, Kevin Roy, Philip Knowles, and David Lipsky, have also withdrawn from the event.
Nuclr Golf shared the news about a large number of withdrawals from the competition on its X (formerly Twitter) account.
Fans took to the comments section to express their disappointment with the number of withdrawals
"Load management is a virus," a fan wrote.
"Sh*t show," one more fan said.
One fan shared that the reason for the withdrawals was that these players only had to play 3–5 holes and were on the verge of missing the cut.
"Maybe it’s because all of them have 3-5 holes left and are 5+ shots outside of the cut line, why bother coming back if there’s not chance of you making the cut/making any money for the week."
Another fan suggested that players withdrew because they are expected to return to the golf course next month. Due to the Los Angeles fires, the Genesis Invitational is reportedly moving to Torrey Pines, though the PGA Tour has yet to confirm this move.
"Maybe playing the same course in 3 weeks with the second tournament having a higher purse and points isn't the best idea for the first tournament," another fan wrote.
Some fans speculated that illness could be a reason for the withdrawals, while others were critical of the tournament itself.
"Some of the players withdrew due to illness apparently there is some flu going around," one more fan wrote.
"Bad look. No wonder people don’t watch anymore. Someday they’ll realize that they need the fans to pay their purses," one more fan added.
"It’s a terrible product. And this sponsor will probably pull out of ongoing tournaments," another fan said.
