Annika Sorenstam is one of the most celebrated golfers in the golf lookbook. Recently, she received the honor of throwing the ceremonial pitch at the Pittsburgh Pirates game against the Diamondbacks. The match will be played at PNC Park and the ceremonial pitch will be thrown at the same venue. Following that, the basketball match will begin on Saturday.
Recently, Mike McGee, Annika Sorenstam’s husband, posted a picture on his X page, where he's seen with Annika and their family at the PNC Park for the LPGA star’s first pitch at the basketball event. The picture showed Annika’s two children and her mother. With the post, Mike wrote:
“@ANNIKA59 is throwing out the first pitch at the @Pirates game tonight. My dad would love this. 😊❤️ @USGA @PNCParkEvents @PNCBank.”
This post was reshared by news anchor Andrew Stockey. In the post, Stockey wrote that Annika shot 69 at the US Senior Women's Open before throwing the pitch at PNC Park.
“Annika Sorenstam shoots 69 at Fox Chapel Golf Club in the US Senior Women's Open before delivering tonight's first pitch at PNC Park #WTAE,” Andrew wrote.
Currently, Sorenstam is playing at the US Senior Women's Open. She's in fifth place on the leaderboard with a 2-under. In the opening round, she scored three birdies and landed at 71. In the next round, Annika Sorenstam made four birdies to end up at 69.
Annika Sorenstam describes her emotions about being back at US Senior Women's Open
Sorenstam won the 2021 US Senior Women's Open by eight strokes. Then, in 2022, she finished in fifth place and last year, she landed in fourth. She's again back at the same event. Ahead of the event, she shared:
“It’s great to be here…To win any tournament is great, and to win a USGA championship is wonderful, obviously. They’re very, very difficult to win…I like to just kind of stay in the moment and just enjoy what’s out here. It’s really neat to come and see all our contemporaries,” Annika Sorenstam said ( via Trib Live).
She continued:
“I only see them once a year, but it’s just so neat that everybody is still playing the game and everybody is still so competitive, all of us…This is really a fun place. It’s beautiful, and I love the golf course. It’s similar to Oakmont, which I’ve been lucky to play a few times.”
Before this event, Annika Sorenstam last appeared at the 2023 US Women's Open, where she missed the cut after shooting 80 and 79. Her total was 15 over 159. She also played at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed by the DP World Tour and there she missed the cut line after carding 75 and 81 in two rounds.
Even in 2022, these were the only two tournaments where Sorenstam participated and missed cutlines.
