The LPGA Tour announced this Friday, January 24, the unusual decision to remove one of the tournaments that was part of the calendar for the 2025 season. It is the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, which would play its second edition in 2025.
The news was published on the official website of the LPGA Tour. The press release informs that the reason for this decision has to do with financial defaults, since the event has not contributed any part of its obligations corresponding to the 2024 and 2025 editions.
LPGA Tour interim commissioner Liz Moore commented on the matter and said the following (via the tour's news service):
"We are deeply disappointed to announce this year’s FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship will not go forward in March. We apologize for the impact this has on our players, as well as on our fans, partners and volunteers."
However, the LPGA Tour has not completely ruled out the possibility of the event returning to the calendar if the financial issues are resolved. The interim commissioner had this to say:
"It is our intention to return to Palos Verdes in the future to host title sponsor, FIR HILLS, once again alongside these great partners. We remain dedicated to bringing this event back to our schedule to honor the incredible legacy of Seri Pak, who has been a wonderful ambassador for the game and this event."
The FIR HILLS SERI Pak Championship was scheduled for March 20-23 at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Los Angeles, California.
Who won the LPGA Tour's 2024 FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship?
The FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship made its debut as an LPGA Tour event in 2024. Nelly Korda won the tournament, the second in her historic streak of five consecutive tournament victories, including a major championship.
Korda began the event with a first-round score of 72, six strokes behind 18-hole leader Alison Lee. However, the world number one shot back-to-back 67s in the second and third rounds to take the lead. She closed with a final round of 69 to finish tied with Ryann O'Toole.
The playoff between Korda and O'Toole came down to just one hole. Korda had a 12-foot putt for birdie that gave her the win and a return to the number one ranking in the world.
After winning the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, Korda went on to win the FORD Championship, the T-Mobile Match Play Championship, and the Chevron Championship, the first major championship of the season and the second major title of Korda's career. She also won the Drive On Championship in her second start of the season.
Korda won two other events in 2024, the Mizuho Americas Open and The Annika. She also finished second at the AIG Women's Open.
