Sergio Garcia missed the qualification for the 2024 US Open after losing in the 7-for-6 playoff in the US Open final qualifying event in Dallas, Texas. This is the first time since 1999 that he will not be on the playing field of the event.
The US Open will take place from June 13 to 16 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Garcia was trying to earn one of the six spots for the US Open via final qualifying that took place on Monday, May 20 at the Dallas Athletic Club in Texas.
Garcia started with a low 66 in the first round and looked in a stronger position to qualify. However, he carded 73 in the second round and was forced to go into the playoff. In the playoffs, he made a bogey and fell short of sealing the spot for the US Open.
Fans online had a lot to say about Sergio Garcia's failure to qualify for the US Open. Many were surprised that he couldn't do it despite the 6 for 7 playoff, while few believed he would eventually get inside the field. Here's a look at some of the reactions:
"Man he just isn’t good at a playoff," one fan wrote.
"Well.. at least he tried lol," another fan commented.
"7 for 6? And the liv superstar couldn't get it done? My lord. Hundred million wasted," another fan wrote.
"Why would anybody think Sergio is going to automatically get in? The only way is if someone that’s already qualified drops out. If I’m that guy that gets to play in the US Open, you would have to shoot me, for me to drop out," one user opined.
"Good on him for trying to qualify. Good chance he’ll make it into the field," this user posted.
"All these players that made a decision ‘to grow the game and spend more time at home’ playing qualifiers….so sad," one user wrote. "Anyway, enjoy that weekend at home with your family!"
