Max Homa is gearing up for the PGA Tour's first event of 2025, The Sentry, under some unexpected circumstances. The golfer announced that his regular looper Joe Greiner will be unavailable for the season opener.

While the change of a regular caddie is challenging, Homa was quick on his feet and sought the help of a seasoned veteran to ensure a seamless transition. Michael Greller, who has been Jordan Spieth's long time caddie, will be on the 34-year-old's bag for the first and possibly second event of the next year.

Joe Greiner has been a cornerstone of Homa's success on the PGA Tour since he officially became the 2024 Masters top-five finisher's official looper. The press release did not state an official reason for his absence.

According to the PGA Tour's Sean Martin, the change is only temporary. Greiner will return to the six-time Tour winner's bag as soon as he can. Spieth has been out of competitive golf for a few months following his wrist surgery in August.

With Spieth not in the field for The Sentry, his caddie became available to fill in for a week or two. Given that Homa's last win was at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2023, he is eager to end the dry streak at The Sentry in January 2025.

All you need to know about Max Homa's caddie

Max Homa has had Joe Greiner on his bag for a very long time. The two met each other for the first time when they were just six years old playing golf in California. The childhood friends began working together as a team in 2013 for a few months before the latter moved on to caddy for fellow PGA Tour pro Kevin Chappell.

He returned to loop for Homa after Chappell took a break from competitive golf to undergo a spine surgery in 2019 and has been on his bag ever since. According to Golf Monthly, Greiner held the course record at the Vista Valencia Golf Club, where he and Homa played as kids. He teases the World No. 41 golfer for bearing that record.

The experienced caddie played collegiate golf at the College of the Canyons in California and had dreamed about turning professional. He was invited to take part in the Mini Tour but took a break from pursuing that to focus on attaining his degree.

Working with Homa, they achieved six titles, which is the golfer's overall record. Here's a look into the childhood team's accomplishments on the PGA Tour (via PGA Tour):

  • 2019 Wells Fargo Championship
  • 2021 Genesis Invitational
  • 2021 Fortinet Championship
  • 2022 Wells Fargo Championship
  • 2022 Fortinet Championship
  • 2023 Farmers Insurance Open
