Mike Weir was playing the US Senior Open at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island, but was unable to complete his second round. The Canadian suffered a wrist injury that forced him to withdraw from the event.
Canadian Sportsnet journalist Adam Stanley reported that Mike Weir provided an update with regard to his situation on his Instagram account. Stanley posted the following on X (formerly Twitter):
"Mike Weir takes to Instagram after having to WD from the U.S. Senior Open after hurting his wrist. That’s some serious ice work!"
Weir provided an update to his fans via an Instagram story. He regretted having to withdraw and reported that he would be undergoing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
Weir withdrew after finishing the front nine of the second round with four bogeys and no birdies. During the first round, he had posted four birdies and four bogeys for a score of even par.
The 2024 edition was Weir's fourth appearance at the U.S. Senior Open. In 2021, he finished second with a score of 4 under, three strokes behind Jim Furyk. In 2022 he was cut, while in 2023 he finished T35.
Weir is the most successful Canadian male golfer in history, as he is the only one to have won a major championship (The Masters, 2003). He also has seven other PGA Tour victories under his belt.
