The Valspar Championship will be held from March 16 to March 19 in Florida, and of course, a notable absence will be Tiger Woods. As PGA went into reminiscing mode on the occasion of the tournament, they took us back to 2018 when Woods made an incredible par save from around the trees.
The video from 2018 shows how the 15-time major winner managed to hit a shot from behind a tree, with the golf stick hitting it during the follow-up and slipping out of Woods' hands. He still managed to get the ball in a favorable position and managed to save par with his next two strokes.
The crowd was right behind Woods, cheering him on with their 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' as he pulled off a miraculous save. As would be expected, this display of skill got a very strong response on social media.
This fan explained how much he missed the legend and also wished for a comeback from him sometime soon.
Another fan, recalling this 'up and down' ride, went on to explain that while a bad previous shot led to this event, what Woods did next is what counts.
This fan here shared his reaction with one word, which was enough to describe the save.
Another fan stated that the fact that this incident is five years old was also what made it 'crazy'.
One person decided to be funny and made this comment.
This fan here was miffed, however, at how the tour was still using Tiger's glory to advertise itself. He reminded them that they should be, instead, promoting younger talents through such videos.
Another fan here agrees with the same thing and thinks that it is sad that the PGA has to go back five years for a promotional video of this championship.
This fan here brutally trolled the video, saying that it was only because of a bad strike earlier that Woods got into this position. He barely minced his words.
Here is another fan with a rather sarcastic and cheeky comment on that shot.
A person was not surprised at Woods having managed to pull off that save.
The Valspar Championship 2023
Play will begin in the Valspar Championship on Thursday, at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort just outside of Tampa, Florida. Five of the world's top 25 players are expected to be in the 2023 Valspar Championship field, including Sam Burns, who is a two-time defending champion and world No. 15 right now. A prize money of $1,458,000 is the winner's take at this event.
What happened last year?
Last year, at the 463-yard par-4 at the Copperhead Course - also known as the start of the Snake Pit, a lethal three-hole stretch - Burns shot a 33-foot birdie putt. This was on the second playoff to beat rookie Davis Riley and successfully defend his title at the Valspar Championship.
“I think that that’s the Snake Pit, that’s its MO, it comes down to some dramatic finishes and crazy things happen on that stretch,” Burns had said after the win last year, also adding, “to be on the good side of that the last couple years is definitely something that I don’t want to take for granted.
