The mixed team golf event is being seriously considered for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Golf became part of the Olympics in 1900, but it was only held twice, in 1900 and 1904, before being canceled.
The sport finally returned to the Olympics in 2016 and has been part of the Games in the last three consecutive editions. However, only men's and women's individual golf events currently take place in the prestigious sporting events.
Recently, International Golf Federation Executive Director Anthony Scanlon provided an intriguing update, stating that they are seriously considering having a mixed team golf event in the 2028 Olympics. In his recent interview with NBC Olympics and Paralympics, Scanlon was asked if the IGF was serious about the mixed golf event in the Olympics, to which he replied:
"Yeah, very seriously, Rich. We've put a submission to the IOC the beginning of last year. It's been considered by the IOC, as I said, very seriously. Why? Because I think there was about well, I know there was about 23 events at the Olympics Games in Paris that were mixed teams events. (0.09)
Notably, when golf became part of the Olympics in 1900, there were both men’s and women’s individual events. In 1904, the men’s team event was shelved. However, when the game returned to the Olympics in 2016, only men’s and women’s individual events were included.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Scottie Scheffler won the gold in the men’s individual event, while Lydia Ko won the gold in the women’s event. Nelly Korda won the gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
