New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner has been hitting the greens and practicing his golf this summer. Gardner has posted updates on his golf journey regularly on his X [formerly twitter] account through posts and videos.
After roughly three weeks of practicing golf, Gardner has made an honest confession about the sport. He said on X:
"Never thought I would say this, but golf is harder than football."
Gardner has played NFL for two seasons and has made his mark with Pro Bowl nods and first-team All-Pro selections. In 2022, he won the Defensive Rookie of the Year overwhelmingly with 46 out of 50 first-place votes.
Reacting to his X post, PGA Tour Golfer Michael Kim quoted his tweet and said that he needed to show Gardner's post to some of his friends.
However, it's not as though Gardner is opting for golf and skipping his football training sessions. While talking to Andrew Beaton of the Wall Street Journal, Gardner said:
"Right now, my schedule every day is pretty much the same,” he says. “I train, and I golf."
Recently, Gardner said that he was finding golf "very expensive." In a post on X, he wrote:
"Golfing also very expensive. Paying $54.99 for some golf balls just to play 18 holes and lose them all"
The NFL star has a four-year contract with his team New York Jets worth $38.7 million. The contract comes with a signing bonus of $25.3 million.
PGA Tour golfers respond to Sauce Gardner's need for tips
Sauce Gardner has garnered quite some attention learning golf. He shares updates on his learnings and his experiences while playing golf. He recently asked for tips to improve his golf game. And PGA Tour golfers were ready to help Gardner.
Will Zalatoris said (via PGA Tour):
"He's got some speed for one. I mean the dude's an athlete, we know that, but I mean that's pretty impressive. Clean up a little bit of the short game there and he's going to be pretty good, pretty quick."
Cameron Young said that Gardner doesn't need much help with the driver. He concurred with Zalatoris on Gardner's short game and said (via PGA Tour):
"Short game – we need a little more weight forward, little bit steeper. But pretty good."
Golfer Chris Kirk couldn't believe that Gardner has been learning golf for just a few weeks now. Kirk said (via PGA Tour):
"Yeah, that looked pretty good. You said he just started? A couple weeks ago? He doesn't need any help from me, he's a lot better than I was two weeks into playing golf."
Meanwhile, LIV Golfer and US Open Champion Bryson DeChambeau invited Gardner for a lesson on his YouTube Channel via a post on X.
The New York Jets' 2024 season looks promising as the team's quarterback Aaron Rodgers returns from his Achilles injury. Gardner will be trading his golf clubs for football gear as training camp kicks off later this month.
