Golf wives have traditionally dropped from the sky at the RBC Canadian Open, and defending champion Nick Taylor's wife Andie obliged in 2024. After her husband's epic victory in 2023, the couple returned to Hamilton Golf & Country Club, only Andie dropped in from above the course while her husband walked below on the ground.
With Andie Taylor was Lona Dahmen, wife of Joel Dahmen. It is a long-standing tradition in conjunction with the Canadian military. Initially, Adam Hadwin's wife was to join Andie, but she couldn't. So, in stepped Lona, and the two dove from 12,000 feet out on Wednesday, May 29.
According to the PGA Tour website, Lona Dahmen said that she would happily skydive again. Andie Taylor did not share that same enthusiasm, but she was willing to keep the tradition alive for the final year that the RBC Canadian Open is held at Hamilton.
Nick Taylor's wife helped spur his 2023 RBC Canadian Open win
There was a point during the 2023 RBC Canadian Open when it appeared as if any hope of a Nick Taylor home victory was gone. He wasn't in pole position and wasn't playing all that well in the first round. His wife Andie might have saved things by encouraging him to let loose.
She said (via PGA Tour):
“It just looks like you’ve not having fun. You and (caddie) Dave (Markle) go be yourself tomorrow; cut it out essentially.”
Taylor obliged, and said afterward that he had felt that his game was in a good spot:
“It was a weird day and weird mindset … it was a bit of a mindset change, really having nothing to lose starting Friday. I knew I needed to shoot at least 4 under to make the cut; I was kind of like, ‘Alright, better play well.’"
He noted the disappointment in not getting off to a hot start in the one opportunity he had to play in front of the home fans:
“(The start) was disappointing in a sense for a lot of reasons, because you want to play well at this event especially. I had really nothing to lose that Friday, and that was a good mindset to be in. Be aggressive.”
Taylor adhered to his wife's advice, shooting 67, 63, and 66 in the final three rounds to enter a playoff with Tommy Fleetwood. In that tense playoff, the two golfers had to go to four holes. Both birdied the first and then parred the second two.
Nick Taylor earned his trophy after hitting another birdie on the fourth hole. Fleetwood couldn't match, so the tournament ended there. Andie had successfully turned her husband around, but she did have to jump out of a plane the following year as a result.
