Nicolai Hojgaard is representing Denmark at the Olympics Golf at Le Golf National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France. Hojgaard is currently in contention for a medal, with one round to go at the men's golf competition at the Olympics.
Hojgaard is one of the two players representing Denmark at the Summer Games. His countryman Thorbjorn Olesen is also one of the 60 players on the field for the competition. Further, the Danish golf legend Thomas Bjorn is accompanying the team.
Hojgaard was asked by the media about Bjorn's importance in Team Denmark. He said (via ASAP Sports):
"It's huge. We are having a great time. It's important to have a good time, as well. But he's a guy who has been a big part of my golf career and a big part of Thorbjørn's, as well.
"So to have him here, and he's obviously a huge character to have around. He was very successful in 2018. Yeah, it's good to have him around. He brings some good stuff to the table and yeah, it's just pretty cool to play a good round in front of."
Thomas Bjorn represented Europe four times in the Ryder Cup (1997, 2002, 2014, and 2018). Europe won the tournament every single time. He was the non-playing captain in 2018.
Nicolai Hojgaard is currently tied for fourth with Hideki Matsuyama with a score of 11-under 199 while Olesen is tied for 13th with 8-under 205. Hojgaard was further asked if Bjorn has any official title. He said:
"He's our team captain. He's our team captain this week."
After scoring 70 and 70 in the first two rounds, Hojgaard carded a splendid 62 in the third round at Le Golf National. He scored one eagle on par-5 14th and seven birdies on the 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 16th, and 17th holes to finish with a score of 14-under 199.
Nicolai Hojgaard is currently three shots behind Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm. He will tee off at 6:28 am ET with Hideki Matsuyama and Rory McIlroy on Sunday, August 4.
