Lilia Vu is taking it all in at St. Andrews, which is where she and the rest of her companions on tour will be this week for the AIG Women's Open. It's an iconic venue, one that hosts men's and women's Major tournaments.
It'll host the final one of the 2024 season for the women, and the rarity of this occasion is not lost on Vu. She said:
"We're at St. Andrews, which is like the place that everyone wants to play. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance. There's a little bit of pressure, but I think I know it's going to be a battle for everyone, not just me. So I'm going to try my hardest, do my best out here."
Vu added via the Ladies European Tour that everything has been "so cool" and that she played the back nine yesterday and a pro-am today in preparation for her tee time on Thursday. The Rolex number two golfer in the world will try to take on Nelly Korda and everyone else and come out on top this weekend.
Lilia Vu discusses defending title at AIG Women's Open
Lilia Vu is the defending champion at the AIG Women's Open. Because it plays at a different venue often, she doesn't necessarily have the experience at St. Andrews, but she does have her name on the trophy right now.
Vu stated that she had a send-off for the trophy and stopped by Dunvegan to see the memorabilia. Vu said that she also met a lot of local children and loved answering questions and hitting her driver for them.
Lilia Vu got herself a cat as a reward for winning last year and is looking forward to potentially getting another cat if she can win again. She said (via LET):
“I think I’m not putting too much pressure on myself to defend a title. I mean, it’s a new week at a new golf course. I’m just going to show up to the tournament the same way I do every single time and try to beat the course every day if it allows with the weather. But I’m just going to try my best, not put too much pressure."
She said there's a tendency to think there's something to lose when defending a title, but Vu believes that when everyone starts at even on Thursday morning, it's a brand new game.
