The 2023 PGA championship is going exceptionally well for Corey Conners. The Canadian golfer is sitting at T2 at the end of the third round at Oak Hill. Connors was an underdog going into the championship. Now that he has a chance of winning, it is a delight for Canadian golf fans.
Only one Canadian golfer has previously won a major: Mike Weir, who won the 2003 Masters. With Conners currently holding second place, Weir believes he can become the second Canadian golfer to win a major. Speaking about Conners' playing ability, Weir said via Twitter:
"The first time I played with Corey we got paired together at the Masters one year. He's just such a consistent, level headed young man. He's put himself in the mix enough now and I think his confidence level is just getting higher."
Weir also stressed the importance of experience while being in such a high-pressure situation. Playing and winning other tournaments on the PGA Tour helped Weir, and he feels that Conners' experience will help him tackle the PGA Championship:
"Getting a win earlier this year has also helped. Kind of like me to a certain degree. It took me a little bit, a couple of times to getting there and feeling comfortable enough that I could get it done."
Corey Conners looks to become only the second Canadian golfer to win a major
Being a golfer from Canada also comes with its own set of expectations. With very few Canadian golfers doing so well on the Tour, it will be a delight for fans to watch Corey Conners win.
Pointing out the expectations from Canadian golfers, Weir said:
"Of course there's highs and lows coming with the expectations when you're from the country that doesn't have as many players as the United States.
"We get singled out a little bit more. More focus is on us and with that comes expectations. I think Corey is handling that really well."
Corey Conners had two exceptional rounds, carding a 67 and 68. He made the cut while leading the field alongside Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler. The third round saw him finish with a 70, leaving him with a -5. Conners currently sits at T2 along with Hovland while Brooks Koepka has taken the solo lead.
Oak Hill has been a tough course for golfers to navigate, with weather conditions making it unpredictable. However, if Conners can reproduce his consistent play from the first three rounds, he definitely has the chance to win the PGA Championship.
