PGA golfer Billy Horschel took to social media to react to the upsetting vandalism news at the St. Andrews golf course. The Tim Morris statue at the Old Course was the target of the vandalism as the golf club in his hand was broken off.
The incident took place on November 8. The bronze statue built in honor of the legendary Tim Morris was recently unveiled just before the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. His great-great-granddaughter Sheila Walker was present at the ribbon cutting ceremony. Within a month, the statue has attracted criminal activity.
Golf historian Roger McStravick had campaigned for the establishment of the statue. The Scotland native took to social media to share the details of the incident. US golfer Horschel reshared the post and wrote a heartfelt message regarding the matter.
"Very sad! Hopefully they are caught and fully punished by the law."
Reportedly, authorities are looking into the CCTV camera footage for information.
"I was a little mentally tired, starting Sunday at St Andrews, it hit me" - Billy Horschel on missing the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
US golfer Billy Horschel has had an impressive European Tour. He won the BMW PGA Championship against favorite Rory McIlroy at Wentworth. The 37-year-old also tied for second at the Open Championship.
Currently, he is in a comfortable fourth place in the season-long standings. He has already made it into the Middle East playoffs. However, he decided to skip the ongoing Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship due to mental fatigue. It would have been a great pay day for him otherwise to compete in the $9 million prize purse event.
He, however, said he was "very appreciative" of the crowds and the experience he had playing in the DP World Tour events (via The Mirror):
"I am very appreciative of the crowds, I am so amazed by all the support I get when I do come over here. It is surreal to me. I just want to say thanks to everyone for all the support and looking forward to a month off, a much-needed month off. I was a little mentally tired, starting Sunday at St Andrews, it hit me. I need a month off, work on the game a little bit, and recharge the batteries."
His last start in Europe came at the French Open, where he missed the cut. The month-long break would be necessary for Horschel as he will tee off in the season finale in Dubai next week.
