American golfer Chris Kirk took a subtle jibe at fellow PGA Tour player Patrick Cantlay for not recalling paying for greens. The PGA Tour is kickstarting its new season this week at The Sentry in Hawaii.
Chris Kirk has returned to defend his title, and prior to the tournament, during a press conference on January 1, he shared an interesting incident about the last time he paid for playing. During the conference, a reporter asked Kirk if he could recall the last time he paid the "green fees."
The American was not quite sure of the exact time but stated that it was a "few years ago" when he joined his fellow PGA Tour player Sepp Straka and his caddie on the greens. Sharing the incident, Kirk said (via ASAP Sports):
"I think it might have been on Oahu a few years ago, because Sepp and Michael, my caddie, and I, went and played some course, I can't even remember the name of it, and we just booked a tee time online and we went.
"And I can't remember if they, I can't remember if we even told 'em that we were PGA TOUR players or not, and, but if we did, they didn't care. So, but I can't, I'm not, you know, don't quote me on that, I don't remember exactly."
However, next, the reporter asked if he would be "shocked" to hear that Patrick Cantlay "couldn't think of one" of such incidents. Replying to the reporter, Kirk said:
"No"
Interestingly, Patrick Cantlay will also be playing this week at The Sentry. The first round of the tournament will start on Thursday, January 2.
Chris Kirk reflects on his 2024 PGA Tour season
Kirk started his campaign in 2024 with a victory at The Sentry. He had a good start to last season and had some decent outings throughout the year. During the press conference of The Sentry 2025, Chris Kirk opened up about his last season, saying (via ASAP Sports):
"There were a lot of really great things that I did last year, and there were a lot of things that I would have liked to have been a lot better at. I think that if you had told me starting off the year that I was going to win a Signature Event and make the TOUR Championship, and have a solid, you know, a solid year in the Majors, I would have been really happy with that. "
In 2024, he played in 23 tournaments and recorded three top-10 finishes and one victory. Meanwhile, he will start the 2025 season at The Sentry on Thursday, January 2.
Kirk will tee off for the first round at 4:15 pm ET in a group with Keegan Bradley and Jason Day. Meanwhile, Patrick Cantlay will tee off at 2:21 pm ET with Collin Morikawa and Sam Burns.
