PGA Tour rookie Pierceson Coody almost breaks ISCO Championship 18-hole scoring record

RBC Canadian Open - Round Three
Pierceson Coody fired 61 in the opening round of ISCO Championship

PGA Tour rookie Pierceson Coody fired an 11-under 61 in the opening round of the ISCO Championship, falling just one stroke shy of breaking the 18-hole scoring record.

Coody, who earned his PGA Tour card earlier this season, is making his 27th start on Tour at Keene Trace Golf Club. Coming into this week, he had made nine cuts in fifteen starts, with his only top-ten finish being a T5 at the Charles Schwab Challenge last week.

On Thursday, July 11, Coody started the week on a high note by firing an 11-under 61 to take an early three-stroke lead. He recorded 11 birdies in the opening round, including six straight from Hole 5 to 10. The first-round 61 is both his career-low round and the second-best round at the ISCO Championship.

So far, four players have shot 60 at Keene Trace, with James Hahn being the most recent to achieve this feat in the third round in 2021.

"I've been putting really nice all season," Coody said during the post-round interview. "It's kind of a core set if you keep it in play, keep it in front of you, you have a lot of wedges, you end up with a lot of looks for birdie and it's just one of those days that I saw a ton of putts go in."

During the round, he made 20 putts, which is a personal record. Besides making six straight birdies is another first for him.

"I'm trying to run my own race," Pierceson Coody continued. "I didn't start the season the way I wanted to obviously, it was really slow. I've had some tournaments where I've kind of flashed a little bit."

He added that he was just trying to improve his rhythm and was trying to run his own race.
