Luke Kwon, who made headlines earlier this year after winning the inaugural edition of the Creator Classic, has started off strong in an Asian Tour event. The former PGA Tour China golfer transitioned in his career from a professional golfer to a content creator. His YouTube channel currently has 302K subscribers.
Having won the first-ever PGA Tour's Creator Classic in August 2024, he was invited to compete in the Black Mountain Championship, an Asian Tour event that kicked off with its first round on Thursday, October 17, in Thailand.
Kwon had an impressive start at the tournament, shooting a round of 5-under 67. The South Korean golfer began his campaign at the event on the first tee hole with a birdie. He went on to shoot three birdies on the front nine and two on the back nine for a bogey-free round of 5-under, surpassing several professional golfers on the leaderboard.
The tournament is currently underway, and at the time of writing, Kwon is tied for 19th place. Meanwhile, Soero Pierre Henri leads the game at 9-under, though he has yet to complete the round. Liu Yanwei is tied for second place with Todd Sinnott and Charng Tai Sudsom.
After a solid start to the tournament, Luke Kwon is hoping for another strong round on the second day of the event. Speaking about the tournament, he said (via Golf Monthly),
"I'd like to hit a little more fairways, try to keep hitting greens."
Notably, along with Luke Kwon, former golfer and current content creator Taewook Koh also received an invitation to the Asian Tour event. However, he had a rough start and shot 72 in the first round.
Luke Kwon praises Kiwi golfer’s impressive performance at Asian Tour event
Kwon received widespread appreciation for his impressive performance at the Black Mountain Championship. Interestingly, the former golfer took to his Instagram account to give a shoutout to Kiwi golfer Nick Voke, who is also competing at the Asian Tour event. Voke also had a good start.
Sharing a story about the Kiwi player, Kwon wrote:
"Can we also talk about @nick.voke shooting -5 today on a sponsor's invite? This tournament actually makes a difference for his tour status, not me."
Voke has since completed his round and shot a round of 4-under and was tied for 32nd place at the time of writing.
Luke Kwon has played at a professional level before this. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour, PGA Tour Latinoamérica, and also the PGA Tour China. He won the 2019 Qinhuangdao Championship, which is his only professional win.
However, currently, he is best known for his YouTube videos. He often shares golf content on his channel and has so far uploaded 189 videos.
