Police officer involved in Scottie Scheffler's arrest saga at PGA Championship charged for theft

Scottie Scheffler was arrested before the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The World No. 1 was charged on four counts which included second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and traffic violations.

Scheffler has been acquitted of all the charges following his arrest. Recently, a police officer who was associated with Scheffler's arrest has recently been charged with theft. Wave 3 News anchor and reporter Ward Jolles first reported the news.

Jolles reported on Friday that Louisville Metro Police Dept Officer Javar Downs who was one of three police officers who failed to activate his bodycam during Scottie Scheffler's arrest, has been arrested. Downs allegedly took $4000 from a suspect during the booking process.

Downs has been charged with 'Theft by Unlawful Taking $1k or greater' and official misconduct after reportedly pocketing money from a suspect.

On the arrest of the officer, the Louisville Metro Police Department said in a statement:

"LMPD's Public Integrity Unit (PIU) immediately opened an investigation and early this morning, arrested Officer Javar Downs. Chief Humphrey has placed Officer Downs on emergency suspension, limited his police powers, and has begun the process of terminating the employment of Officer Downs from the Louisville Metro Police Department."

Scottie Scheffler was released soon after his arrest. He went on to play in the second round of the PGA Championship and eventually finished tied eighth at the tournament with an aggregate score of 13-under 271.

Scottie Scheffler is currently competing in the 2024 BMW Championship. The second of three playoffs to determine the FedEx winner is being played at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado.

Scheffler scored 1-under 71 in the first round and tied for 18th on the leaderboard. He carded 10 straight pars in the first 10 holes. He then scored three birdies on the 11th, 12th and 14th holes against two bogeys on par-4 13th and par-4 15th.

He scored two birdies on the 12th and 14th holes and a bogey on par-4 13th.
