Presidents Cup skipper Jim Furyk has announced that, unlike at the Ryder Cup, Patrick Cantlay is going to wear a hat this week. He said they had found one that fits the golfer, adding that players were more comfortable this time.
The fourteenth edition of the Presidents Cup will take place at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada from Thursday, September 26, to Sunday, September 29. While Furyk is leading Team USA for the first time, Cantlay is set to play in the event for the third straight time.
On Tuesday, September 24, during the pre-event press conference for the Presidents Cup, Furyk was asked how Cantlay was convinced to wear a hat this week.
"We finally had one that had that odd of a shape that it would actually fit on there," he replied. "I think a lot of it's our vendors. He wore a hat two years ago in Charlotte. We had the same vendors on the PGA Tour, and he seems to be comfortable. If my guys are comfortable in hats, they can wear hats. If they're not comfortable in hats, it doesn't matter.
"It doesn't work out too well for me, I'll just say. My head will turn purple after a day, but I want them comfortable. I think we would both say that the clothing this year, my guys love it. Guys are comfortable this year, which is really nice," he added.
International Team captain Mike Weir also agreed that players were happy this time.
For the uninitiated, the hat became a hot topic at last year's Ryder Cup when Patrick Cantlay refused to wear a hat throughout the tournament. Although he stated that the hat didn’t fit his head properly, many reports claimed he was protesting for players to be paid for competing in the event.
