All you need to know about the Utah golf course, the venue for PGA Tour's Black Desert Championship
The PGA Tour has returned to Utah after 60 years, with the first edition of the Black Desert Championship taking place at the golf course of Black Desert Resort. It was designed by the renowned architect Tom Weiskopf and was his last project before his death.
Speaking of his design, Weiskopf said (via PGA Tour):
“It’s one of the most beautiful vistas and places that you could ever just stand there and (do) a 360 turnaround and look at all these beautiful mountains.”
The venue is best known for its black lava all around, giving it its name based on the color of the prominent rocks it has. The golf course also features red rock and lush green fairways. It is ranked number one in the best public access golf courses in Utah by Golfweek.
Speaking of this beautiful golf course, Weiskopf's business partner, Phil Smith, said (via PGA Tour):
"We lost (Weiskopf) a couple times, he fell down the lava a couple times and we sort of fished him out. He was beaten and bloodied and everything else, but he kept on going.”
Notably, the Black Desert Championship started with its first round on Thursday, October 10. However, play was suspended due to darkness and will resume with the first round on Friday, October 11, at 10:00 a.m. ET.
Meanwhile, Adam Svensson completed his first round and shot 11-under 60, with nine birdies and an eagle. He was impressive with his game on Thursday and took the lead. Henrik Norlander tied for second place with Matthew McCarty at 9-under. The four-day PGA Tour event will conclude on Sunday, October 13.
