Dubbed 'The Showdown', the upcoming clash between PGA Tour and LIV Golf stars has fans on the edge of their seats. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will take on Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau in an event with plenty of twists and turns.
A report from Front Office Sports on Wednesday, 9 October revealed some details about The Showdown. One very interesting one was that the event will have similarities to the Ryder Cup, including being played without prize money.
However, not all the details have been finalised, such as the format of the competition. An 18-hole round will be played, but whether it will be match play or stroke play is yet to be decided.
The showdown will take place on 17 December at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. The time of the match has not yet been announced, but it will be televised live on TNT Sports.
Another important detail is that The Showdown will be played on the sidelines of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The players involved are the main organisers and all four will have a stake in the event.
It was also revealed that this is expected to become an annual event, to be played both in the United States and in international destinations. According to the report, it is hoped to take the event to a Middle Eastern location by 2025.
An In-Depth Look at The Showdown Venue
It is no coincidence that The Showdown chose Shadow Creek Golf Course to host its inaugural edition. It is a facility that is heavily involved in high-profile golf, both on the professional circuits and alternative events.
In 2018, Shadow Creek hosted the "Tiger vs. Phil" match, which became the founding event of "The Match" series that has been played ever since. On that occasion, Phil Mickelson defeated Tiger Woods over 22 holes in a match play format.
Shadow Creek then hosted the 2020 CJ Cup when the event was moved from Korea to the United States due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Jason Kokrak won the tournament with a score of 20 under, two strokes ahead of Xander Schauffele.
A year later, Shadow Creek became the site of the LPGA Tour's current T-Mobile Match Play tournament. Nelly Korda won there for the fourth of her six victories in her fabulous 2024 season.
The relationship between Shadow Creek and The Showdown is expected to continue as the venue has reportedly signed a six-year agreement to host the event. If it is finalized that the event will travel abroad every other year, it would return to the Las Vegas venue every other year.
Shadow Creek was designed by Tom Fazio and built by Steve Wynn. It opened in 1990 and is currently a par 72 with a length of 7,560 yards.
