Rory McIlroy came close to winning the 2024 US Open four weeks ago, but ultimately finished one shot behind champion Bryson DeChambeau. McIlroy was highly disappointed at the time and refused to answer questions from the press.

The Northern Irishman also withdrew from the Travelers Championship, which means his press conference on Wednesday, July 10 ahead of the Genesis Scottish Open was his first meeting with the media since the US Open defeat.

A journalist asked McIlroy if he regretted not taking questions from the press after the final round. This was his response:

"Absolutely not. No...it would have been good because you guys would have been able to write something about it or have a few quotes from me. No offence, you guys were the least of my worries at that point"

McIlroy will defend his Genesis Scottish Open title at the Renaissance Golf Club starting this Thursday. A week later, he will take his place in the field for The Open Championship.

The 35-year-old has won four major championships in his career, but it has been almost 10 years since his last title. His most recent triumph was the 2014 PGA Championship in August.

McIlroy began the fourth round of the 2024 US Open on four under par, three shots behind leader Bryson DeChambeau. The Northern Irishman started with two birdies and a bogey on the front nine, and added three more birdies (no bogeys) over the first four holes of the back nine.

At that point, McIlroy was 8 under for the tournament and alternating at the top of the leaderboard with DeChambeau. The eventual champion played in the final group, with the Northern Irishman one hole ahead.

McIlroy parred the 14th hole, but things began unraveling from the 15th. McIlroy hit a 7-iron off the tee there, taking the ball beyond the green. He then missed a 33-foot putt and bogeyed the hole.

On the 16th, he reached the green in two but then three-putted it for another bogey. Here, McIlroy missed his first 3-foot putt of the season.

He made par on the 17th and despite missed opportunities on the 15th and 16th, reached the final hole with a chance to force a playoff. McIlroy reached the green in three but then missed a 3-foot putt for par. Had he made it, the match would've been sent to sudden death.

DeChambeau, who was one hole behind McIlroy, made par on the final three holes to maintain his one-stroke lead and claim his second US Open title.
