Rory McIlroy is set to take a break from golf after suffering heartbreak in the 2024 US Open. The Northern Irishman broke his silence on Instagram and also congratulated Bryson DeChambeau for his stunning win.
McIlroy was criticised heavily for leaving the golf course before DeChambeau was even awarded the US Open trophy. However, a defeat so harsh could break even the strongest of competitors, let alone a man who is winless in major competitions for over a decade.
Rory McIlroy wrote on Instagram:
“Yesterday was a tough day, probably the toughest I've had in my nearly 17 years as a professional golfer. Firstly, I'd like to congratulate Bryson. He is a worthy champion and exactly what professional golf needs right now. I think we can all agree on that.”
The Northern Irishman added:
“As I reflect on my week, I'll rue a few things over the course of the tournament, mostly the 2 missed putts on 16 and 18 on the final day. But, as I always try to do, I'll look at the positives of the week that far outweigh the negatives. As I said at the start of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next major championship than I ever have.”
Rory concluded:
“The one word that I would describe my career as is resilient. I've shown my resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again. I'm going to take a few weeks away from the game to process everything and build myself back up for my defense of the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon. See you in Scotland”
Rory McIlroy WDs from the 2024 Travelers Championship
After announcing a break on his Instagram, Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the 2024 Travelors Open scheduled to kick start on June 17. McIlroy has never won the tournament at the TPC River Highlands.
The news doesn't come as a shock, after McIlroy was handed a cruel defeat by LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau. The 36-year-old led the day for most parts. However, he missed two comparatively easy putts on holes 16 and 18 that gave DeChambeau the chance to fight back.
DeChambeau eventually kept his cool and won his second US Open major title at Pinehurst 2. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy’s winless streak at the major competitions extends to a staggering 3599 days.
Rory McIlroy will return to defend his title at the Genesis Scottish Open before heading into the final major of the year at Royal Troon.
