Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are set to head into the FedExCup Playoffs with rankings of third and first place in the standings, respectively. With the first event of the series - the FedEx St. Jude Championship - underway, Scheffler made a claim that divided opinion.

Prior to his practice round on Wednesday, Scheffler went on to call the FedExCup Playoffs format "silly". The world number one golfer said that competing in tournaments all season long, followed by the playoffs, is redundant when it comes down to one tournament - the final Tour Championship.

However, Rory McIlroy had a different take on the matter. The world number three golfer said (via Golf.com):

"I love this format because if it wasn't this format, then none of us would have a chance against Scottie [Scheffler] because he's so far ahead. So I really like this format... He's so far ahead and you don't expect Scottie to finish outside the top five either. I think it makes the Tour Championship more exciting from a consumer standpoint. Is it the fairest reflection of who's been the best player of the year? Probably not but at this point we're not in for totally fair. We're in for entertainment."

Rory McIlroy is 13 holes through his first round of the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship. The Irishman sits tied for 26th place with an even par score so far for the day with holes left to be played as of this writing.
