Rory McIlroy has announced he's canceled his divorce proceedings with his wife Erica Stoll. The decision comes just weeks after announcing he had filed for a divorce on the eve of this year's second Major, The Players Championships.
When asked by the Guardian about the recent rumors surrounding his divorce, McIlroy said,
“There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool’s game."
The Northern Irishman added,
“Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”
McIlroy is set to play in the US Open this week. He will be hoping to put an end to a long-standing drought without winning a Major. His last win at a Major was back in 2014 when he triumphed in the Players Championship.
5th Major is still very much Rory McIlroy's target
Rory McIlroy might have not won a Major for a decade now, but that has not dampened the PGA star's spirits. The Irishman is confident he is ever closer to winning the eluded Major trophy.
McIlroy finished runner-up to Wyndham Clark last season in the US Open. He will be hoping to stand at the top spot this year after a winningless stretch extending to 36 Majors.
McIlroy said in the US Open press conference:
“I’m really proud of my body of work over the past 15 years and everything that I have achieved, by way of an explanation"
He further added,
“Whether it be season-long titles or individual tournaments or majors. Obviously, getting my hands on a fifth major has taken quite a while, but I’m more confident than ever that I’m right there, that I’m as close as I’ve ever been.”
McIlroy finished T12 in last month's Players Championship. In the year's first Major at Augusta, he posted a miserly T22 finish.
With Pinehurst posing a difficult test for all golfers, it will be interesting to see how Rory McIlroy responds to the challenge at this year's US Open. Can the number 3 golfer in the world finally win a Major?
