Rory McIlroy is back to defend his title at the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open. To commemorate his victory last year, officials at the Renaissance Club have put up a special plaque in the Northern Irishman's name.
Officials put up the plaque to honor Mcllroy's impressive 2-iron, 200-yard shot he made last year. It is considered to be one of the most iconic shots in the history of the tournament. However, upon Rory McIlroy's return to the event, he noticed that the officials had made quite a trivial error on the plaque.
Officials had spelt McIlroy's name wrong, replacing the 'L' in his surname with an 'I' instead. They were quick to correct the error, and the old plaque has now been replaced with a new one. Speaking about it in the press conference ahead of the 2024 Scottish Open, he said via NUCLR Golf:
"I've seen it online, yeah. They spelt my name wrong first time around. It's there now thankfully.”

Rory McIlroy returns to 2024 Scottish Open refreshed after heartbreaking US Open loss
McIlroy's loss at the 2024 US Open was a heartbreaking one, as he lost out to Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke. The World No. 2, still searching for his first Major victory in a decade, decided to take a break after the disappointing performance.
Now at the Scottish Open, McIlroy is refreshed and ready to play golf again. Speaking about his loss, McIlroy said via the PGA Tour:
“I stewed on what happened at Pinehurst for a couple of days. But then, yeah, thankfully I can go home and look at what I've achieved in the game and sort of feel OK about myself. Yeah, look, it was a great opportunity. It passed me by, but hopefully, when I get that next opportunity, it won't pass me by.”
McIlroy enters the Scottish Open ranked as the favorite to win, with odds of +700. Xander Schauffele (+800), Collin Morikawa (+1200) and Ludvig Aberg (+1400) are other top favorites that will make a run for the top of the leaderboard (odds via CBS).
The Scottish Open comes just a week ahead of the fourth and final Major of the year, the 2024 Open Championship. The Open Championship will be followed by golf at the 2024 Olympics, making for a busy week for the pros.
McIlroy will have tough competition from Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele and others over the rest of the season. He will hope to boost his confidence with a win at the Scottish Open.
