Former Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama became the latest member of Rory McIlroy's Boston Common Golf team in the TGL Golf League. The virtual golf league, created by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Mike McCarley, was initially scheduled to start in January 2024 but was postponed to the following year.
The series features six teams of four members, and the teams are gradually revealing their players. On Tuesday, June 18, Boston Common Golf, one of the six teams in the series, announced its fourth member.
Hideki Matsuyama will join Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, and Keegan Bradley on the team. It is important to note that Tyrrell Hatton was initially part of the TGL Golf League, but later joined LIV Golf, creating a vacancy in the series. Matsuyama has replaced Hatton and will be playing for McIlroy's team.

“I’m excited to join Boston Common Golf"- Hideki Matsuyama on joining Rory McIlroy's team in TGL
Hideki Matsuyama is highly elated to join Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, and Keegan Bradley in the TGL series. Following the announcement, he expressed his excitement, stating he looks forward to "pushing the boundaries of golf" to create new experiences for the fans through tech-infused golf series. He said(via PGA Tour):
“I’m excited to join Boston Common Golf and be a part of TGL. Teaming up with Rory, Keegan, and Adam – three incredible players I deeply respect – fills me with excitement and anticipation. Together, I hope we can push the boundaries of golf and create an unforgettable new experience for fans around the world. Most importantly, I am looking forward to the four of us winning championships together.”
Matsuyama has been enjoying a decent season on the PGA Tour in 2024. Earlier this year, he won The Genesis Invitational and had some other decent finishes. He won the Masters in 2021, becoming the first Japanese golfer to win a men's golf Major.
Matsuyama has won 18 professional tournaments in his career, with nine of those victories coming on the PGA Tour. At last week's US Open, he finished in solo sixth place and will also be playing at the Travelers Championship this week.
However, Rory McIlroy withdrew from this week's competition after his heartbreaking outing at the Major last week, where he lost the US Open title to Bryson DeChambeau by just one stroke.
Three of Boston Common Golf's four players, including Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott, and defending champion Keegan Bradley, will tee off this week at the Travelers Championship.
