Rory McIlroy claimed after yesterday's first round that neither he nor his father played very well at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Gerry, the golfer's father, responded by knocking home a brilliant chip-in during round two.
The lie was difficult among the tall grass, but the elder McIlroy channeled his son and calmly lobbed the ball toward the green. It bounced on the green a fair way away from the pin but continuously rolled on.
The ball had more than enough speed and curve to get there, as it rolled right into the pin itself and dropped into the cup for one of the more brilliant shots seen by a non-professional all weekend. Check out the stunning display below:
McIlroy shared the reel to his Instagram story less than a day after saying via ASAP Sports:
"He didn't play very well at all. He bettered me by two, which was nice, but there's definitely room for improvement there for both of the McIlroys. Lovely to be out here with him. We've done this a few time before."
He also noted that his father turns 65 on Saturday, and that the two are enjoying a quality go before then. McIlroy equaled his first-round score with another three under showing in the second round, placing him in a tie for 49th.
Robert MacIntyre frustrated with Rory McIlroy's drive
Driving the green on a par-four hole is fairly difficult. It's not impossible like it is for most par-five holes, but it's a rare occurrence. Those who can drive the ball far off the tee, like Rory McIlroy, don't consistently make it there in one go.
The par-four 14th green is 390 yards away from the tee. McIlroy didn't expect to land on the green, but he was able to do so with just one powerful swing. The only problem is that his 2023 Ryder Cup teammate Robert MacIntyre was still putting.
This minor violation of golf etiquette was not in McIlroy's plans, but it left MacIntyre feeling frustrated nonetheless. The golfer had been lining up a putt but was interrupted, so he stopped entirely and sent a sharp glare toward McIlroy at the tee box.
One commentator said:
"I don't think Bob's too impressed with that."
The co-host added:
"Well, MacIntyre was ready to putt and, his body language, I can tell you he's very unimpressed."
MacIntyre had made a bogey on the two previous holes and was lining up a birdie putt to turn things around when McIlroy drove on him. Fortunately, the distraction didn't seem to be too much for MacIntyre, who slotted home his birdie putt after the exchange with Rory McIlroy.
