Rory McIlroy has ramped up as a marketer for TGL ahead of its weekly event tonight (Jan. 27). The golfer is one half of a star-studded duo that's set to face off on Monday evening, and McIlroy has taken to Instagram to try and generate some fan interest.
The first two weeks saw over 900,000 and one million viewers, respectively. The third week saw a dramatic 32% drop in ratings to the 600,000 range. That kind of drop is alarming for a brand-new program, and McIlroy is doing his new job to market the tour on social media to try and avoid another disappointing week.
He and Boston Common Golf Club, which also consists of Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott, and Keegan Bradley, will face off with Jupiter Links Golf Club. That, of course, is Tiger Woods' team.
It is the first matchup of the two founders of the league so far, which adds a level of intrigue to this particular matchup that wasn't there in the first three weeks. McIlroy, evidenced by three Instagram story posts, is doing his best to drive up the attention on this match.
Woods is joined on his team by Tom Kim, Kevin Kisner, and Max Homa, so this is a matchup that includes several highly-ranked (on OWGR) golfers. They will face off beginning at 6:30 pm EST on ESPN.
Former Rory McIlroy agent doubtful over Tiger Woods' 2025 Majors chances
Chubby Chandler, former agent to Rory McIlroy, cast doubt over Tiger Woods. He spoke on the future Majors Woods might play in, and he did not hold back.
Via GolfWRX, Chandler said:
“I don’t know if Tiger will even be playing in the Majors in 2025 but does it even make a difference anymore? Do I want to see him down the field? No, I don’t."
He continued:
“If he plays in the Majors, I hope he’s at least semi competitive. Not like how he is at the moment. The poor lad. Did you see his right leg? He’s shattered. He’s not in great shape. I don’t know what’s in his head."
"If he stepped away and just watched his boy grow up and do all the things you do, if he then came back he’d then be far enough away from the real Majors to be teed up as an elder statesman.”
Rory McIlroy's former agent said that it's a matter of health not skill or even age. He cited Stewart Cink's Open win but acknowledged that Cink was 'fit' while Woods is not right now. Woods should have four cracks at proving him wrong this year, though some will require a special exemption.
