Rory McIlroy has been a professional golfer for 17 years now and he knows how vital it can be to have the right equipment. Good golfers don't require the best equipment to make them better because the sport is still based on skill and ability, but the Irishman believes the right clubs can make all the difference.
Rory McIlroy spoke on the comfort level of knowing a club is there and not having to think about it in a pressure situation (via Golf Digest):
"There's no second-guessing what your equipment's going to do. You know if you put a certain swing on it, that should be the result that happens. It's critically important to have a club in your hand that you completely trust in. You know exactly what it's going to do, especially in a pressure situation when you need to produce."
When golfers need to produce a certain shot or a certain shot shape for a particular hole, it is paramount that they have and are familiar with the clubs in their bag that can achieve that goal.
Golf legend still believes Rory McIlroy can win the Masters
If Rory McIlroy wins the Masters at any point in his golf career, he will complete the career Grand Slam. He's won every other major championship, some of them multiple times, except that one. He's been on the hunt to complete the slam with his first green jacket for more than a decade.
In the past, golf legend Jack Nicklaus has said he believes the Irishman will one day achieve this. Just recently, he doubled down and said he's still confident in seeing McIlroy finally break through.
Nicklaus said via Golf Channel:
"You get yourself [in a position] where you haven't won for a while and it’s difficult to get out. I still firmly believe that Rory will win The Masters, he's just too good a player not to. I love Rory, he’s a great guy, as talented as any player out there and he’s got a lot more majors in him, he’s just got to get them out."
McIlroy hasn't won a major since 2014. He nearly broke the streak last year with a win at the US Open, but two bogeys on the final three holes opened the door for Bryson DeChambeau to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
The closest the golfer has ever come to winning the Masters was in 2022 when he finished second to Scottie Scheffler by three strokes. He has three other top-five finishes at Augusta National in his career.
He also has two missed cuts in the last four years. Nevertheless, Nicklaus, who has six Masters titles to his name, is as confident in McIlroy as ever.
