Rory McIlroy has finally spoken after his heartbreaking loss at the US Open. He has announced that he will not compete at the Travelers Championship this week.
For McIlroy, the final round of the US Open was quite heartbreaking, as he missed two close putts and lost to Bryson DeChambeau by just one shot. Following the final putt, he rushed out of Pinehurst without interacting with the media.
On Monday, June 17, Rory McIlroy shared a note on Instagram. He announced that he was taking a few weeks off from the game.
"I'm going to take a few weeks away from the game to process everything and build myself back up for my defense of the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon," he wrote.
Speaking on Sunday's round, the Northern Irishman termed it the toughest day in his 17-year-long professional career. He went on to congratulate DeChambeau, dubbing him as the worthy champion that professional golf needed at the moment.
Further in his note, he reflected on his week at Pinehurst. He wrote:
"I'll rue a few things over the course of the tournament, mostly the 2 missed putts on 16 and 18 on the final day. But, as I always try to do, I'll look at the positives of the week that far outweigh the negatives. As I said at the start of the tournament, I feel closer to winning my next major championship than I ever have."
"The one word that I would describe my career as is resilient. I've shown my resilience over and over again in the last 17 years and I will again."
The Genesis Scottish Open is scheduled to take place from July 11 to July 14 at The Renaissance Club.
How did Rory McIlroy perform at the US Open in 2024?
Rory McIlroy started his week at Pinehurst on a great note, taking the early lead after shooting 5-under 65. In the second round, he slipped after posting 72. He regained his rhythm on Saturday, shooting 69 to finish just three shots behind the leader, Bryson DeChambeau.
Rory McIlroy looked determined on Sunday, darting five birdies in the first 14 holes and leading the US Open 2024 with just four holes to go. However, he missed a three-footer on the 16th and did the same on the 18th. This was the second straight year he had to settle for a runner-up spot at the event.
The 35-year-old golfer has had a good season so far. He won two titles on the PGA Tour this season and also defended his Hero Dubai Desert Classic title earlier in January.
