Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia used to be best friends before the LIV Golf came into existence. They played together in the Ryder Cup and even Rory was the best man at Sergio's wedding in 2017. However, the beautiful relationship came to an end after the Spaniard joined LIV Golf.
Garcia recently opened up about his friendship with McIlroy in an interview with The Telegraph and said that his decision to end their friendship was immature.
"I think it is very sad,' Sergio Garcia. 'I think that we've done so many things together and had so many experiences that for him to throw that away just because I decided to go to a different tour, well, it doesn't seem very mature; lacking maturity."
However, he admitted that they both have their own lives, and he respects his choices. Garcia went on to say:
'But Rory's got his own life and he makes his own choices, the same way that I make mine. I respect his choices, but it seems like he doesn't respect the ones I make. So a one-way street.'
Rory McIlroy is vociferously supporting the PGA Tour and has not been in contact with any of the LIV golfers. Moreover, he even deleted Sergio Garcia's number from his mobile.
Speaking in an interview, Rory said:
"Their best days are behind them. I haven’t done anything different. They are the ones that have made that decision. I can sit here and keep my head held high."
McIlroy recently found himself in hot water after a brawl with Patrick Reed during the 2023 Dessert Classic in Dubai. Reed approached the Northern Irish golfer, but he ignored him. Reed became enraged and threw a tee at Rory.
The former World No.1 even criticized the CEO of LIV Golf, Greg Norman, in his interviews.
"You are listened to" - Sergio Garcia on joining the LIV Golf
Sergio Garcia is one of the most successful golfers in the world. His decision to join the LIV Golf certainly shocked fans. Garcia opened up about his decision to join the rival series in his interviews.
He claimed that the LIV golf listened to all of their players. Garcia said:
"We had so much criticism when we started off last June that it unified us all together and that included with the bosses. You can suggest things, ideas, and although they are not always followed up and acted upon, you are listened to. That didn't happen on the PGA Tour. There are only two, maybe three players who the bosses listen to on that Tour."
Interestingly, Rory McIlroy is on good terms with Tiger Woods, who was eventually one of Sergio Garcia's biggest rivals. The 15-time major champion and the Spaniard made headlines after headlines all through the 90s.
It is worth mentioning that LIV golfers and PGA Tour players will play at the Masters in April. Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and Sergio Garcia will all be on the same field at Augusta National.
