Sergio Garcia's rank in the OWGR has improved significantly following a strong finish at the US Open 2024. The Spanish golfer is 310th in the OWGR this week and has moved over 450 spots thanks to his T12 finish at Pinehurst.
Before this week, Sergio Garcia was 773 in the OWGR as he stopped receiving points since joining LIV Golf. The OWGR doesn’t recognize LIV Golf and hence players get no OWGR points for LIV events.
Sergio Garcia and a few other LIV Golfers have subsequently seen their rankings fall in the OWGR. LIV Golfers only receive OWGR points if they compete in a Major or other OWGR-recognized tours and events like an Asian Tour event.
Garcia got into the field at the US Open at the last minute. The Spanish golfer had initially failed to qualify for the Major through final qualifiers. However, he received an invitation from the USGA and was one of the final six golfers to be included in the field at the last moment.
Thanks to a strong finish at the US Open, Sergio Garcia has now managed to get himself to 310th in the rankings.
Sergio Garcia said he was happy with his T12 finish at the US Open 2024
Sergio Garcia posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) thanking fans after finishing T12 in the US Open at Pinehurst Golf Course No.2.
"Great day yesterday, still very happy with 12th finish. 99th major and 25th U.S. Open. Great week in Pinehurst. Thank you to everyone who came out, supported, and rooted for me," he wrote.
Garcia added that he would have loved to finish in the top 10, which would have given him an exemption for the 2025 US Open at Oakmont. However, he said he would find another way or go back into the qualifiers again and try his best to play in his 26th US Open.
The 44-year-old Spanish golfer was one of the last-minute picks from the USGA for the Major. He started his round with a 69 as he remained bogey-free on a daunting course and carded a birdie on the 5th hole to remain -1 on Thursday.
Garcia slightly lost his momentum on days 2 and 3 as he finished one over for the day on both days. However, an even-par finish on the final day got him to T12 as Bryson DeChambeau won the Major at -6, while Rory McIlroy finished runner-up at -5.
Sergio Garcia will now compete in the LIV Golf Nashville event from June 21 and will look to continue his form at The Grove in Nashville.
