Sergio Garcia had given up his DP World Tour membership after joining LIV Golf as the tour-sanctioned golfer. This decision means he is ineligible to compete in the Ryder Cup, as only DP World Tour members are allowed to participate in the biennial event.
However, there is a new possibility for the 44-year-old golfer. Team Europe captain Luke Donald has said that he is in talks with Garcia about rejoining the DP World Tour.
During the captain's press conference today, Donald said thathe had a chat with the Spanish golfer, and that the latter is considering rejoining the DP World Tour.
"Well, first of all, obviously, he resigned his membership a couple of years ago. But we have had some chats, and he's considering rejoining. He'd have to follow all the rules and regulations like everyone else, and if he does that, then again, he will be eligible to partake in the Ryder Cup," Donald said.
Garcia, along with Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and Richard Bland, resigned from the DP World Tour in May 2023 after being sanctioned for serious breaches committed by joining LIV Golf. Their resignations marked a significant departure from the European Tour.
However, as the tensions between the tours subdue, the LIV golfers have a chance to become eligible to compete in the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage.
How has Sergio Garcia performed in the Ryder Cups?
Sergio Garcia is one of the most experienced Ryder Cup golfers in the world. He has been part of every Ryder Cup since 1999 except for 2010 and 2023. He has an incredible record of 25 wins, 13 losses, and seven halves in 45 matches.
The 44-year-old golfer has won six times in 10 appearances and also has the most points (28½) for any European golfer in Ryder Cup history. Hence, his presence in the European squad can provide a boost to the visiting team as they look to retain their title.
However, the Spanish golfer is unable to compete in the Ryder Cup, he has said that he views the situation in two ways
"I look at it two ways. If I’m not able to play anymore, it’ll be a little bit sad. But at the same time, I look at it that I’ve played many, many times. I’ve been successful in it both individually and as a team. So that’s what I take from it," Garcia said.
He hopes that things will settle down and that he will have the opportunity to compete in the Ryder Cup in the future..
"Hopefully, things will kind of settle, and, you know, we’ll see where everything sits at the end. And hopefully, they just give us the possibility — all of us — to be a part of it again if we’re playing well enough. We’ll see where that settles in the near future," Garcia concluded.
