Sergio Garcia has thanked his fans for their support at the qualifying event for the 2024 Open Championship, two days after blaming the crowd for his loss. Garcia failed to qualify for the Major for the second consecutive year.
Garcia took to X and wrote:
"I've been fortunate enough to play in many majors, 96 to be exact, out of the last 100. This week was another test, and while I did not quite make the qualifier as I had hoped, it was still a great experience as always."
The LIV Golfer scored 1-under 71 and 2-under 70 in two rounds at Liverpool's West Lancashire Golf Club. He finished sixth with a score of 3-under and failed to qualify as only the top four advance. Garcia further wrote in the X post:
"The most incredible takeaway from this year’s qualifier, and last year's, comes down to the fans. I am grateful for each person who came out and showed support, followed my group, and waited around until I finished the last of the 36 holes. I see you, and I thank you."
However, Sergio Garcia had earlier blamed the crowd for his failure to qualify for the Open Championship. Garcia had said (via Bunkered):
"When you have 2,000 people following us with no ropes, nothing. The marshals were trying to do as good a job as they could do but obviously, we had to stop pretty much on every tee for two or three minutes to hit our tee shots because people were walking in front of the tee and on the fairway."
Garcia further attributed a few bogeys to the crowd and said that it cost him a place at Troon. The 2024 Open Championship will be held at Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland, from July 18-21, 2024. 16 LIV Golfers will play at the tournament.
During the qualifying event, Garcia even screamed at officials on the eighth hole and commented sarcastically that they 'are always right and players are always wrong.'
Sergio Garcia has a splendid record at The Open. He has made 25 appearances at the Major with 10 top-10 finishes and 13 top-25 finishes at the tournament. Let's take a look at his performances at the event.
