Europe team captain Suzann Pettersen reacted to the shirtless celebration of the USA team caddies at the Solheim Cup. The prestigious golf team event started on Friday, September 13, with the Americans having a phenomenal start, taking an early lead with a score of 6 against the European team's 2 points. They maintained the momentum even on Day 2 when they extended the lead to 10-6.
On Saturday, when Alison Lee holed out, her caddie Taylor "Shota" Takada celebrated by removing his shirt. Interestingly, he was joined by Meghan Khang's caddie, Jack Fulghum.
During the press conference of the tournament, Pettersen was asked about the celebration. Replying to the reporter, the Norwegian golfer hilariously said (via Golf.com):
"I would just say, s*x sells. Go for it. I mean, go on. I think I, you know, caddie in our team maybe would...s*x would sell... but yeah, those two probably not. I am joking. Fair play."
The caddies went shirtless on the course as part of the hole-out celebration, but there is a backstory to it. After the match, Alison Lee explained the reason and revealed that she had a bet with her caddie—if she holed out at the tournament, her caddie would celebrate shirtless. She said (via NBC Sports):
“Right after the first hole, [Fulghum] kind of looked at us and said, ‘Come on, guys, I want to see one of you guys hole out. I want to see a really good shot.’ He said that if one of us holes out we’ll get $500, and I said, I don’t want your money. I don’t need $500.
"How about you take your shirt off, and he’s like, yeah, I’ll do it, and he looked over at my caddie, Shota, and he’s like, you’re going to do it, and they agreed, and it’s crazy it happened five minutes later," she added.
The USA team has been playing fairly well on their home soil and is in contention to win the Solheim Cup. The final of the event will take place on Sunday, September 15.
