Min Woo Lee has fired his sister Minjee Lee as caddy ahead of the 2023 Masters. The PGA Tour pro let go of the LPGA star, accusing her of being a "show-off."
Min Woo, looking towards a glorious chapter in golf's major championship history books at Augusta National, said that he’ll be better off without his sibling on the greens.
Having landed his spot in the competition held at the "heaven on earth," Lee said that he’ll have the women in his family tag along. He also stated that either his golf-teaching mother Clara or his girlfriend will be with him at Augusta.
The 24-year-old then reiterated that his dual women's major-winning superstar sibling Minjee would not be carrying his bag during the Masters.
Speaking to AAP on Thursday, Min Woo Lee said, as quoted by The West Australian:
"It's either my mum or my girlfriend. They're coming over, so it will be one of them, but not my sister this year. She got her chance to shine last year and she showed off too much, so not this time."
It is pertinent to note that Lee had earlier acknowledged Minjee as his idol. However, it’s safe to say that he is hungry to seize family bragging rights from the reigning US Open champ.
Having risen to World No. 5 with a front-nine 30 at Augusta during last year's final round, Lee will be eyeing the green jacket this time around.
Despite not being in the bag, he will continue to bank on his sister for moral support.
He also noted that he is looking to tap into the vast Augusta experience held by major-winning countrymen Jason Day and Adam Scott. The youngster said that he is looking forward to his practice rounds with the ace golfers.
Min Woo Lee looking to ride his Players Championship form to the Masters
Min Woo Lee landed a strong sixth-place finish at the Players Championship earlier this month. Recalling his last-round, last-group duel with world No.1 Scottie Scheffler at TPC Sawgrass, Lee said:
"I knew it was going to be tough to beat him, but the first few holes I was there. It's a special experience being up there in America and having a chance to win or being up there. For the first experiences I've had at the Players and the Masters, it was an incredible result.
"To shoot six-under on the first nine at Augusta, it was a great debut and not many people have done that, and having the equal record for the lowest nine. It gives me a lot of confidence knowing I can go out and shoot that number. Hopefully I can do it again this year."
Min Woo Lee secured his ticket to the Masters just last week at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas. The golfer beat Sahith Theegala to take the one group match win he needed to qualify for the majors.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Aussie fairs at the tournament, alongside some of the world’s best-rated golfers.
