Tiger Woods's ex-coach Hank Haney has reacted to the ongoing speculation surrounding players joining LIV Golf. The Saudi-backed circuit completed its third season earlier in September, and as the year nears its end, the series has begun finalizing its roster for the 2025 season
LIV Golf player Thomas Pieters moved from RangeGoats GC to Dustin Johnson's 4 Aces GC on December 2. Meanwhile, there is speculation about new players joining the series. Golf analyst Luke Elvy took tweeted:
"From what I’m hearing, there are going to be names confirmed to LIV today & over the next week or so that will crush some fans. Phil Mickelson’s “chess, not checkers” line keeps running through my head. The longer this goes on the more the PGAT gets devalued. Do a deal now!"
Haney responded to the speculation:
"Snooze you lose, it’s going to be DPWT and LIV and then what happens?"
Notably, amid all this, a report surfaced last month claiming that the DP World Tour has been in talks with LIV Golf about a potential deal to create a schedule allowing players from both circuits to compete in each other's series. Meanwhile, the PGA Tour is already negotiating a merger with the Saudi-backed league.
Tony Finau withdraws from Tiger Woods' Hero World Challenge, rumored to join LIV Golf
This week, some top-ranked PGA Tour players are set to compete at the Hero World Challenge, hosted by legendary golfer Tiger Woods. The unofficial PGA Tour event features a field of 20 players and is scheduled to start on Thursday, December 5, and will have its finale on Sunday, December 8.
However, American golfer Tony Finau withdrew from the competition, sparking speculation that he might be joining the Saudi-backed league. Sepp Straka has stepped in to replace him at this week's event, while rumors of Finau's potential move to LIV Golf swirl. Although he has not commented on the speculation, his wife, Layna posted a cryptic TikTok video featuring Miley Cyrus' song, which references "more drama." The lyrics say:
“My life is complicated enough. The last thing I need is more drama. Hey, Miley. Hello, drama.”
While speculation about players joining LIV Golf grows, 20-year-old rising Spanish star Angel Aroya reportedly rejected an offer from LIV Golf, according to Ten Golf. He was offered a spot on Martin Kaymer's Cleeks GC, which has a vacancy following Kalle Samooja's relegation due to poor performance in 2024.
