Steph Curry and Andre Iguodala are two of the most recognizable golf fans in the NBA. Not only do they excel as amateur players, but they also actively participate in fantasy golf leagues.
According to Golf Digest, the two are so invested in fantasy golf that they even submitted their picks during the NBA Finals in 2018, when the Golden State Warriors swept the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Both players shared with Golf Digest their strategies for success in their fantasy golf leagues. Here's part of what Steph Curry had to say:
"I understand different golfers and their styles and [how they match] with certain courses. Especially in a one-and-done fantasy league, you have to be aware of the 'horses for courses' approach and obviously make the best pick for that week."
Iguodala, for his part, assured that he always tries to have the "top guys" for the "top purses" events. This is what he said:
"For the top purses, I want the top guys in there, and then obviously the majors are where you get the LIV guys, so you have to take that into consideration as well. They don’t usually get out to a good start early on … so it’s kind of tricky."
Iguodala also said it was important not to get carried away with emotions when making picks.
"It’s like a stock. You can’t be too emotional. As Warren Buffett says, 'Don’t let your emotions get in the way while investing.' It’s the same with fantasy golf. Like, never be mad at a guy who didn’t have a good week."
Fantasy golf originated in the 1950s, but has gained momentum in recent years. Even the world's main tours, such as the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour, have their own leagues in which fans can participate.
Steph Curry and Andre Iguodala's passion for golf
Steph Curry has been playing golf since he was 10, even playing on his high school team. Although he later took up basketball as his main sport, his passion for golf never left him.
Curry is recognized as one of the best golfers in the world among other sports stars. According to Golf Digest, his golf handicap as of July 2024 was +1, which is well above average among amateur players.
Iguodala, on the other hand, started playing golf in his youth. His progress in the game took him from a 36 handicap in 2013 to 22 in 2015 and 15.6 in 2016. Currently (October 2024), Iguodala has a 5.8 handicap and plays at the Contra Costa Country Club in California.
