Matt Kuchar beat Si Woo Kim 7-and-6 on Friday, booking his place in the next round of the WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay. By doing this, he equaled Tiger Woods' record of 36 wins, the most in the event.
Prior to the start of the WGC-Dell Technologies Matchplay, the 44-year-old needed two wins to tie the record with Woods and now he has a chance to make the record his as he faces Jason Day on Saturday morning.
Kuchar told the PGA Tour that the record didn't cross his mind before the tournament began. However, it came to his mind when he missed a five-footer birdie against Chris Kirk to win the match.
"Coming in here, I had no idea. I had to be told. Certainly very cool. The point of this tournament is to keep winning matches, and I wanted to win this match to be able to move on to the 16s. So that was the main focus. Certainly getting a chance to tie any record of Tiger's is an amazing thing.
"That's something I still find it hard to comprehend that I'm saying that, that I tied one of his records. So I'm hugely proud, pleased. There's 300 more records, I'm sure, to go, but it's a fun one to be able to say you've kind of got something you tied Tiger with."
Kuchar's first win at WGC-Dell Technologies came against Anthony Kim. His 36 wins included his title victory vs. Hunter Mahan in 2013. His record at the event is now 36-11-5.
"It's (36 wins) a good go," said Kuchar. "Certainly been doing it for a long time and doing it well for a long time to be able to have that many wins, to have the same as Tiger in match play record."
"I'm bummed this is the final year for it"- Matt Kuchar disappointed as PGA Tour decides to shelve WGC Matchplay
The PGA Tour has announced that this will be the last edition of the WGC-Delll Technologies Matchplay, which has left many disappointed. Kuchar, who has left a legacy and has some of the greatest memories of his career here, said he will miss the event.
"I think these events are great. 72 holes of stroke play every week sometimes runs together a bit. I miss the old International at Castle Pines. I miss the Stableford format. I think it was fun to mix it up. Match play, I certainly love, as you would guess with a good record, something unique, something different to do. Yeah, I'm bummed this is the final year for it."
