Suzann Pettersen will remain Team Europe's captain for the next two Solheim Cups. She was already set to be this year's captain and is now confirmed to remain in her position for the 2024 Cup.
She said via AP:
“This will allow us to build a strategy and a philosophy for the team that we can keep, which will offer more consistency for the players and enable them to focus on their performance. My focus is on getting the team around the players and the atmosphere right and then taking that up to the next level.”
Pettersen is a longtime member of the European team, having been a member in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2019.
In 2019, she knocked in the winning shot and retired after that. Now, she's returning as captain. She was vice-captain in 2021 when the Europeans took home the victory.
Suzann Pettersen discusses captain role ahead of Solheim Cups
Suzann Pettersen, after having been confirmed for the next Solheim Cup before this year's cup even transpired, remarked on her role via Sky Sports:
"Being offered the role for a second time before the 2023 matches have even been played is a little different to usual, as we usually play the competition every two years and announce the next captain after the competition, but because of the changes to the schedule and having back-to-back Solheim Cups in consecutive years, it makes perfect sense."
She continued:
"So far, my 2023 captaincy has been a pure joy so to be able to lead the team in Europe this year and then again next year in the US, near the nation's capital, will be a great honour."
Ladies European Tour CEO Alexandra Armas said Pettersen was a natural choice for the captaincy:
"She is doing a superb job in her preparations for the 2023 Solheim Cup in Spain and her experience, passion and pride will make her a great leader in 2024. The players know and respect Suzann and this continuity in leadership will ensure that they have the best preparation as we drive towards another incredibly successful event in 2024."
Pettersen has been a big figure in the European women's golf scene, so her role as captain for the Solheim Cup makes sense. There is arguably no better person for the job.
What is the Solheim Cup?
The Solheim Cup is a biennial (taking place every other year) tournament for professional women golfers. It is made up of teams representing Europe and the United States, similar to the Ryder Cup for the PGA Tour.
It was named after Norwegian-American golf club manufacturer Karsten Solheim. She was a big reason the tournament even started in the first place.
Normally, the tournament occurs every other year, which is why Suzann Pettersen remarked on the back-to-back captaincies being so odd.
Nevertheless, Team Europe won't have to worry about their leadership until at least 2025, though they may continue to give Suzann Pettersen the role in perpetuity.
